Antonio Canova and the politics of patronage in revolutionary and Napoleonic Europe by Christopher M. S Johns( Book )

12 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 415 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The sculptor Antonio Canova was the most celebrated artist of a perilously protean and fractious era. In revolutionary and Napoleonic Europe, while other artists bent to the will of the political powers that commissioned their work, producing art in the service of the state, Canova managed to resist both threats and blandishments. Although he held strong opinions on the issues of his day, he avoided direct political or ideological engagement in his sculpture. Christopher M.S. Johns presents the first sustained study of Canova's career in relation to his patrons and contemporary politics. In it he enlarges our understanding of an artist whose work is crucial to the evaluation of European art and political history."--Jacket

China and the church : Chinoiserie in global context by Christopher M. S Johns( Book )

3 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 170 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This groundbreaking study examines decorative Chinese works of art and visual culture, known as chinoiserie, in the context of church and state politics, with a particular focus on the Catholic missions' impact on Western attitudes toward China and the Chinese. Art-historical examinations of chinoiserie have largely ignored the role of the church and its conversion efforts in Asia; Johns, however, demonstrates that the emperor's 1722 prohibition against Catholic evangelization, occurring after almost a century and a half of tolerance, prompted a remarkable change in European visualizations of China in Roman Catholic countries. China and the Church considers the progress of Christianity in China during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, examines authentic works of Chinese art available to European artists producing chinoiserie, and explains how the East Asian male body in Western art changed from "normative" depictions to whimsical, feminized grotesques after the collapse of the missionary efforts during the 1720s."--Provided by publisher
Benedict XIV and the enlightenment : art, science, and spirituality by Rebecca Marie Messbarger( Book )

6 editions published between 2015 and 2016 in English and held by 90 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Pope Benedict XIV Lambertini (r. 1740 58) was one of the driving forces behind the Italian Enlightenment of the eighteenth century. His campaign to reconcile faith and empirical science, re-launch a dialogue between the Church and the European intellectual community, and expand papal patronage of the arts and sciences helped restore Italy's position as a center of intellectual and artistic innovation."--
Women, art and the politics of identity in eighteenth-century Europe( Book )

1 edition published in 2003 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This collection of new essays by specialist authors addresses women's activities as patrons and as 'patronized' artists over the course of the century. It provides a much needed examination, with admirable breadth and variety, of women's artistic production and patronage during the eighteenth century. By opening up the specific problems and conflicts inherent in women's artistic involvements from the perspective of what was at stake for the eighteenth-century women themselves, it also acts as a corrective to the generalizing and stereotyping about the prominence of those women, which is too often present in current day literature."--Jacket
