Wideband fiber optic communications link by John Randolph Bray( Book )

2 editions published in 1984 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This thesis examined the feasibility of upgrading a nine port fiber optic bundle telecommunications system to a single strand fiber optic system. Usable pieces of equipment were identified and new Light Emitting Diodes (LED), Photodetectors and single strand SMA styled fiber optic connectors were ordered. Background research was conducted in the area of fiber optic power launching, fiber losses, connector losses and efficiencies. A new modulation/demodulation circuit was designed and constructed using parts from unused equipment. A new front panel was constructed to house the components, switches and connectors. A 2-m piece of optical fiber was terminated with the new connectors and tested for connector loss, numeric aperture and attenuation. The new LED was characterized by its emission radiation pattern and the entire system was tested for functional operation, frequency response and bandwidth of operation. An operations manual was prepared to ensure proper use in the future. The result was a two piece, single strand, fiber optic communications systems fully TTL compatible, capable of transmitting digital signals from 80 Kbit/sec to 20 Mbit/sec. The system was tested in a half duplex mode using both baseband and carrier modulated signals

Before Mickey mouse: a history of American animation( Visual )

1 edition published in 1982 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This is the first comprehensive exploration of the artists and studios who created and developed animation in its early years from 1900 to 1920. It is divided into two parts. Part 1, Origins: This segment examines the roots of animation in the optical toys, comic strips and vaudeville shows of the 19th century. It features the very first animated cartoon as well as the work of such pioneers as J. Stuart Blackston, Winsor McCay, John Randolph Bray, Raoul Barré, Earl Hurd and the surprising contribution of William Randolph Hearst. Part 2, Rising stars: This part discovers the rare early work of artists who would later become famous in the 1920's, 30's and 40's It includes the first stop-motion film developed by Willis O'Brien (who would later go on to create King Kong in 1933), the first Felix the Cat cartoon and Walt Disney's cartoon ("Newman laugh-o-gram"), as well as early animated work by Paul Terry ("Mighty Mouse," "Heckle and Jeckle") and Max Fleischer ("Betty Boop," "Popeye," and "Superman"). Each of the thirteen cartoons in the program is accompanied by original instrumental music of the period, jazz and ragtime. Narration provides a short introduction to each cartoon and explains developments such as rotoscoping, moving backgrounds and the use of celluloid sheets. The narration is supplemented by cartoons in freeze-frame and slow motion as well as production stills and portraits of the artists
