Er läßt sich aber nicht beirren und ist fest überzeugt, daß er wieder eine Beschäftigung finden wird. Als aber kurze Zeit später auch seine Frau Ilona als Oberkellnerin ihren Job verliert, fällt er in ein Loch. Durch Eigeninitiative gelingt es den beiden aber schließlich, der Arbeitslosigkeit zu entkommen und die drohende Beziehungs- und Lebenskrise abzuwenden. Der Film zeichnet sich aus durch eine optimistische Grundhaltung, die es den Personen ermöglicht, auch in Zeiten tiefster Rezession noch an ihre Chance zu glauben. (Zoom, 6/969 (...) Er hat mit der Technik der Aussparungen zu tun, der spezielle Kaurismäki-Effekt, mit einer Lakonie, neben der noch der schweigsamste hartgesottene Krimi geschwätzig wirkt, aber auch mit Wiedererkennungseffekten. Jedenfalls fühlen wir uns immer dann besonders zuhaus bei Kaurismäki, wenn dort bedeutungsvoll über dem Wodkaglas geschwiegen wird.
