The Russian nobleman Fedor Vasilʹevich Protasov cannot come to terms with the hypocrisy surrounding him, but is powerless to fight against it. He begins to drink, leaves home, and gradually declines. Protasov's behavior promotes his wife Liza's increasing closeness with Viktor Karenin, a longtime friend of the family. Fedor, not being able to endure the lying and humiliation involved in the forthcoming divorce trial, stages a suicide, and apparently leaves the life of his family forever. Only thanks to an unfortunate occurence does it become known that Fedor Protasov is alive.
