Major Lewis Burwell settled on Carter's Creek, in Gloucester County, Virginia, ca. 1640. He married Lucy Higginson, daughter of Captain Higginson. He died in 1658, at age thirty-three. His only child, Lewis Burwell (1632-1672), of Queens Creek, York County, Virginia, married twice and was the father of fourteen children. Most descendants listed lived in Virginia

The collection includes the account book, 1811-1822, of Nathaniel Burwell, and correspondence, 1820-1871, accounts, 1811-1872, and diary, 1860, of George Harrison Burwell, all concerning mill and farming operations at "Carter Hall" and the "Island" plantations in Frederick (now Clarke) County, Va. G.H. Burwell's accounts also concern medical and school fees. Correspondence also concerns agricultural societies and the American Colonization Society. Included in the collection are legal papers, especially G.H. Burwell's estate papers; correspondence, 1852- 1882, of Agnes (Atkinson) Burwell pertaining to the education of women and the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association; and genealogical notes
