This dissertation traces the dynamics of utopian thought in the music of six late twentieth-century musicians: Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith, PJ Harvey, Tori Amos, Sleater-Kinney, and Neko Case. Over the course of four chapters, each dedicated to a different "genre" of utopian thought--political, social, dystopian, and ecological--I fuse literary theory with utopian studies, feminist theory, philosophy, and music analysis to probe these six artists' music for traces of utopia. The utopian themes sung by these female artists have a remarkable level of congruency with with those found in other feminist utopian literature, in which feminized visions of utopia offered women throughout history a socially viable course of discursive and ideological deviance. I argue that utopianism in popular music can create similarly provocative examples of such deviance. The analyses that follow seek to portray not only the ways in which popular songs can contain utopian themes, but also how utopian popular music by women can act as ideologically or discursively deviant. I approach each song as a liminal "space," a starting point from which the articulation of utopian thought becomes possible, a musical space where artists and audiences can entertain utopian ideals. My conception of musical space draws heavily on postmodern theory, particularly Michel Foucault's analysis of the otherwordly, ethereal, contradictory spaces he terms heterotopian. In keeping with the intangible utopianism proposed by Bloch and the oppositional spaces discussed by Foucault, the utopias these women envision are elusive and paradoxical. These six artists have no interest in drawing up blueprints for the perfect world, although their songs successfully create music where utopian ideals can coexist, if briefly, with the real worlds in which they sound11ocn857307853mixAmos, ToriEllen Amos and family lettersHistorySourcesEllen (Mrs. Joe) Amos and family were Miwok Indians residing in Mariposa County, California.
