Islamic art and culture : a visual history by Nasser D Khalili( Book )

An oversized visual history of Islamic civilization as reflected in its fine art spans 1,200 years and surveys a range of media, from architecture and painting to silk textiles and calligraphy, in a volume that also demonstrates the relationship between Islamic artists and their western peers
Japonisme and the rise of the modern art movement : the arts of the Meiji period : the Khalili collection by Gregory Irvine( Book )

2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 326 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"From the 1860s to the 1890s, the rise of Japonisme and the Art Nouveau movement meant few could ignore or resist the obsession with all things Japanese. Superbly crafted and often highly decorated Japanese objects -- lacquer, metalwork, ceramics, enamels, and other decorative items -- stimulated and inspired Western artists and craftsmen to produce their own works. Arts of the Meiji period (1868-1912) were displayed at international exhibitions, in the galleries of influential dealers, and at fashionable stores. Artists from van Gogh, Whistler, Monet, and Edouard Manet to Klimt and Schiele were all, to varying degrees, influenced by the Japanese art. Van Gogh himself stated that he owed his inspiration to Japanese art, but he was probably not conscious of the full extent to which art in Europe had already been influenced by that of Japan."--Publisher website

12 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in 4 languages and held by 205 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The history of Islam stretches from the seventh century to the present and encompasses an area from Spain to Indonesia, North Africa to the Steppes. The material culture of the Muslim peoples is accordingly richly varied, taking in architectural projects on a vast scale and minutely detailed miniature paintings, exquisitely patterned silk textiles and bold calligraphy. The spectacular format of the Timeline allows the reader to view the magnificent sweep of the art of Islam in a unique way. You can see at a glance exactly what was happening in the different arts and countries of Islam within the same period. The Timeline is lavishly illustrated throughout with colour photographs, many of which are taken from the world renowned Khalili Collection. In addition to the Timeline there is a section devoted to the historical dynasties of the Islamic world and a list of Islamic Rulers along with a four-page gatefold map which encapsulates the global aspects of Islamic history and culture. There then follows an essay on the history of Islamic art and architecture, including biographies of leading Muslim craftsmen, painters and architects and specific chapters devoted to individual arts including: architecture, calligraphy, Qur'ans, pottery, glass, jewellery, arms and armour, carpets & textiles, carvings and seals and coins"--Publisher's description

Aramaic documents from ancient Bactria (fourth century BCE.) from the Khalili collections( Book )

1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 39 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Letters and accounts connected with the court of the satrap of Bactria, Akhvamazda, and with his governor, Bagavant, ... the first time that parts of the internal correspondence of the administration of Bactria and Sogdiana have come to light. ... This is the fourth century BCE, close to the end of the Achaemenid rule in Iran, ... in the north-eastern tip of the empire. ... Some of the items in this collection are written on wooden sticks, the first time that this system of bookkeeping is being discovered anywhere, and they are remarkably well preserved. ... The present book, with the original documents that it contains, gives a picture of everyday life in an important Achaemenian province. It affords a glimpse into ... how a large empire of antiquity was run and how the Persian rule was ultimately replaced by a Greek administration. The notes in this book show the continuity in usage from Achaemenian to Sasanian, and sometimes up to modern times."--From introductory notes, page x, xiv, xx
