Besides implying Fermat's Last Theorem, his work establishes a new reciprocity law. Reciprocity laws lie at the heart of number theory. Wiles' work draws on many of the tools of modern number theory and the purpose of this volume is to introduce readers to some of this background material. Based on a seminar held during 19931994 at the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, this book contains articles on elliptic curves, modular forms and modular curves, Serre's conjectures, Ribet's theorem, deformations of Galois representations, Euler systems, and annihilators of Selmer groups. Difficulties related to sensing and identification hamper control of such systems. These problems require collaboration between mathematicians and engineers. To promote such collaboration, the Fields Institute sponsored a threeday workshop entitled "Problems in Sensing, Identification and Control of Flexible Structures" in June 1992. This volume contains papers presented at the workshop. Topics range from theoretical research on the wellposedness of systems, to experimental implementations of various controllers. A number of controller design techniques are discussed and compared, and there are several papers on modelling the complex dynamics of flexible structures. This book is a useful resource to control theorists, engineers, and mathematicians interested in this important field of research
