During WWII he flees from the Nazis, lands in a Russian orphanage at the age of 14 and is brought up in the Communist manner. When Hitler's troops march into the town, he claims to be an ethnic German, becomes a frontline interpreter and finally ends up in an elitarian school for members of the Hitler Youth. He is released from his role at the end of the war, a role which he was forced to adopt in order to survive. The epilogue shows the authentic Salomon Perel who emigrated to Palestine
