Maud Ely and John H. GIbbons spent the early years of their marriage in the Navy. John graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1879. In 1897 he was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy, in 1906 he was Naval Attaché to the Court of St. James, and in 1911 he returned to the Naval Academy as superintendent. After his retirement in 1920, he and his wife moved to Avon, Connecticut, for the summer and spent winters at their home in Palm Beach, Florida. The bulk of the correspondence in this collection is to Maud from such notable individuals as Anna Roosevelt Cowles (Theodore Roosevelt's sister), Paul Wilstach, and Margaret Cresson, the daughter of sculptor Daniel Chester French. The two letters to John H. Gibbons are from Admiral Frank Fletcher and from the secretary of Daniel Chester French
