The selected plays of Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee by Jerome Lawrence( Book )

4 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 567 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Collected here for the first time are the major plays of award-winning authors Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee. This edition represents the only attempt to date to explore the range and nature of the team's collaboration. With introductions to each of the eight works - Inherit the Wind, Auntie Mame, The Gang's All Here, Only in America, A Call on Kuprin, Diamond Orchid, The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail, and First Monday in October - editor Alan Woods places the plays in their critical and historical contexts. Although they are known primarily as successful commercial writers, Lawrence and Lee have always shared a passionate commitment to larger social issues. Their plays were written not just to entertain a broad audience but to present some "problem" ideas - for example, the evolution versus creationism debate in Inherit the Wind, perhaps their most famous collaboration

Fashion behind the footlights : the influence of stage costumes on women's fashions in England from 1878-1914 by Karen Adele Recklies( )

2 editions published in 1982 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Beginning in 1878, the English stage, in the form of well-dressed actresses in modern plays, provided both a showplace for the latest couture fashions and, consequently, role models for women who needed guidance in matters of dress and deportment. Top couturiers in Paris and London, such as Charles and Jean Worth, Redfern, and Lucile, designed costumes for actresses to wear onstage and offstage. As with their creations for other clients, couturiers used expensive fabrics and trims in stage gowns, resulting in costumes that cost fifty pounds or more. Gowns designed by couturiers appeared in society plays, sporting melodramas, and musical plays presented at West End theatres. The public's fascination with fashionable stage costumes was often reported in newspapers and magazines as exceeding the interest in the play in which they were being worn
