At the centre is a love story between a morally compromised lawyer and a cynical 'party girl' both living fettered lives in Chicago during the Prohibition years. Party Girl was a cause celebre for the place of mise en scene in the 'auteur theory'. Nicholas Ray tried to make the most out of an assigned, indifferent script through the use of colour, widescreen, performance and kitschy Metro sets to create what he described as the enclosed 'kind of bizarre reality' of the characters. Ray's biographer Bernard Eisenschitz comments that Ray ignored the studio-imposed thematic conventions of the script ('the idea of doing what is right and therefore lawful'), instead placing 'the accent ... on the duplicitous relationships between the characters, on the maze of compromises in which they evolve'

The wings of eagles by John Ford ( Visual )
2 editions published between 1957 and 1986 in Spanish and English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This is a complex questioning of essentially masculine values deeply rooted in the culture. The story is based on the life of Spig Wead, naval officer and writer. He scripted two of Ford's films and was a personal friend. (Ward Bond appears in a fond parody of Ford). Spig is unable to combine his career and marriage. The exuberance of the early scenes of inter-service rivalry and the pursuit of glory rings hollow in what is basically an unattractive portrait of military life. Following the breakdown of his marriage and a crippling accident, Wead is overtaken by a profound sense of failure and loss
