Based on 10 years of research in contexts as diverse as a doctoral program in rhetoric and composition and a scientist's peer review correspondence, this book develops a dynamic, activity-based theory of genre. Disciplinary genres, the authors propose, are constituted by evolving, communal, historically sedimented practices of "insiders" responsive to the dynamics of (re)current rhetorical situations. To support their unique perspective, Berkenkotter and Huckin draw on empirical findings from both micro- and macrolevel investigations including case studies of individual writers in action and large-corpus analyses of evolving genre features. The research methods and the theoretical framework presented should raise provocative questions for scholars, researchers, and teachers in rhetorical studies, communication, sociology, applied linguistics, education, and other fields interested in disciplinary communication

The idea for this symposium began when Sheryl Fontaine and Susan Hunter told Rick Gebhardt about two studies they had made of manuscript reviewing practices in composition studies--one surveying experiences and perceptions of authors and one dealing with journal referees. The subject of peer reviewing seemed an important one for a field working, as ours is, to definie its scholarly identity. Rick sensed that his efforts to bring blind refereeing to composition's oldest journal might prove useful in exploring the subject and, for addtional views, he contacted several of CCC's consulting readers. Carol Berkenkotter, who had been studying peer reviewing in the sciences, agreed to attempt a brief theoretical perspective. Phillip Arrington decided to explore the subject personally, from his experiences both as author and referee. And Doug Hesse chose to use personal experience, chaos theory, and MLA panels to discuss referees' reports as scholarship

A study examined a number of concepts drawn from recent research on the social contexts of writing as it is conducted in academic and professional communities to determine how novice writers learn the rhetorical and linguistic conventions that constitute specialized, disciplinary literacy. These concepts were applied to a close inspection of three texts written over an 18-month period by an adult writer, Nate, entering a research community within a doctoral program at a major university. The texts chosen for analysis were introductions to end-of-term project reports which, written in the first three semesters, served as milestones in that they represented the culmination of a semester's thinking on a given research topic and the writer's compiled linguistic and substantive knowledge in his new discipline. The study suggests that the changes occurring over time and the linguistic and rhetorical features of these texts can be seen as indicators of this student's initiation into a disciplinary subspecialty. Student Writers and Their Audiences: Case Studies of the Revising Decisions of Three College Freshman by Carol Berkenkotter( Book )

To examine the relationship between student writer and audience, five volunteers from a college freshman composition class were asked to think aloud on tape as they revised three out-of-class drafts of a paper. The subjects gave one protocol after getting feedback on an early draft from their own writing group, another after a student-teacher conference, and a third after receiving feedback from a peer evaluation group. Protocol transcripts were analyzed for audience-related and revising activities. Review of the data revealed a wide range of student responses to peer comments. Case studies of three of the five volunteers showed that one student deliberately ignored his audience's responses, yet indicated no strong sense of authorship; one student made revisions largely independently of his readers' expectations but showed, in his evident self-motivation, a clear sense of writing ownership; and a third student temporarily lost confidence in her own judgment when confronted with peer criticism. These case studies suggested that peer evaluations are not always beneficial for student writers. Further research is needed on the complex interactions between writers and readers. (Mm)
