Um 1896 lernten sich die Studenten Karl Hofer (1878- 1955), Wilhelm Laage (1868-1930) und Emil Rudolf Weiß(1875-1942) an der Karlsruher Kunstakademie kennen. Sie verband Freundschaft und eine zeitweilig intensive Werkgemeinschaft - eine programmatisch ausgerichtete Künstlergruppe bildeten sie jedoch nicht. In regem Austausch entwickelten sie ihr ausdrucksstarkes Frühwerk und bedienten sich bevorzugt der druckgrafischen Techniken Holzschnitt, Radierung und Lithografie. Liebe und Tod, Einsamkeit, Melancholie und Angst, das Verhältnis zwischen Mann und Frau waren die Leitthemen ihrer sich zwischen Symbolismus und Protoexpressionismus bewegenden Bildsprache.
