Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, dit Le Corbusier (1887-1965) est sans conteste l'un des architectes les plus inventifs et les plus influents du XXe siècle. Suisse d'origine, naturalisé français en 1930, il est aussi le premier à pratiquer son métier à l'échelle mondiale. A la fois architecte, peintre et théoricien, il n'a cessé de voyager, pour apprendre d'abord, pour diffuser ses théories ensuite, enfin pour construire. Son oeuvre concerne tous les programmes qui ont marqué le XXe siècle, notamment l'habitat individuel et collectif, l'urbanisme, les bâtiments publics, culturels, sacrés ou industriels. Auteur d'oeuvres majeures telles la villa Savoye à Poissy, la Cité radieuse à Marseille, la chapelle de Ronchamp ou les bâtiments du Capitole de Chandigarh en Inde, Le Corbusier fut pourtant longtemps combattu ; il aura finalement les honneurs de funérailles dans la cour Carrée du Louvre, assorties d'un discours d'André Malraux resté célèbre
