The German left : red, green and beyond by Andrei S Markovits( Book )

15 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 628 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This comprehensive, richly detailed history and political analysis of the German Left since 1945 focuses on the emergence of the Greens as the most influential anti-establishment party in Europe and possibly in the industrial, capitalist world, and shows how this process has fundamentally changed politics in the Federal Republic, transformed the style and output of one of the most important and traditional Lefts in Europe, and provided the most prominent and potent expression of "postmodern" politics in the advanced capitalist states. Uniquely broad in scope, the book gives special consideration to the East German Left and to the revolutionary changes of 1989-90 while revealing political and social implications, present and future, far beyond the immediate German context. An imaginative, insightful study of a topic of great interest to students, this book is an important resource for courses in comparative politics, political economy, and political sociology
The disciplinary revolution : Calvinism and the rise of the state in early modern Europe by Philip S Gorski( Book )

19 editions published between 2003 and 2007 in English and Undetermined and held by 495 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What explains the rapid growth of state power in early modern Europe? While most scholars have pointed to the impact of military or capitalist revolutions, Philip S. Gorski argues instead for the importance of a disciplinary revolution unleashed by the Reformation. By refining and diffusing a variety of disciplinary techniques and strategies, such as communal surveillance, control through incarceration, and bureaucratic office-holding, Calvin and his followers created an infrastructure of religious governance and social control that served as a model for the rest of Europe--and the world
American covenant : a history of civil religion from the Puritans to the present by Philip S Gorski( Book )

9 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 426 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Was the United States founded as a Christian nation or a secular democracy? Neither, argues Philip Gorski in American Covenant. What the founders actually envisioned was a prophetic republic that would weave together the ethical vision of the Hebrew prophets and the Western political heritage of civic republicanism. In this ambitious book, Gorski shows why this civil religious tradition is now in peril--and with it the American experiment. Gorski traces the historical development of prophetic republicanism from the Puritan era to the present day. He provides close readings of thinkers such as John Winthrop, Thomas Jefferson, Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Hannah Arendt, along with insightful portraits of recent and contemporary religious and political leaders such as Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. Gorski shows how the founders' original vision for America is threatened by an internecine struggle between two rival traditions, religious nationalism and radical secularism. Religious nationalism is a form of militaristic hyperpatriotism that imagines the United States as a divine instrument in the final showdown between good and evil. Radical secularists fervently deny the positive contributions of the Judeo-Christian tradition to the American project and seek to remove all traces of religious expression from the public square. Gorski offers an unsparing critique of both, demonstrating how half a century of culture war has drowned out the quieter voices of the vital center. American Covenant makes the compelling case that if we are to rebuild that vital center, we must recover the civil religious tradition on which the republic was founded.--AMAZON

"This collection of original essays by leading academics represents an interdisciplinary intervention in the continuing and ever-transforming discussion of the role of religion and secularism in today's world. The Protestant ethic revisited by Philip S Gorski( Book )

11 editions published between 2011 and 2013 in English and held by 162 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In "The Protestant Ethic Revisited", pioneering sociologist Philip Gorski revisits the question raised by Max Weber in The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism about how the Christian West was reshaped by the world-changing energies of the Calvinist movement. Gorski not only considers the perennial debate about religion and capitalism, but he also devotes particular attention to the influence of Calvinism on the political development of the West. "The Protestant Ethic Revisited" is a masterful new collection of Gorski's essays on religion and comparative historical sociology. Reflecting the aim of much of Gorski's work, this anthology shows how nationalism, secularism, politics, and religion in public life are olderoand less stableothan previously thought
