Fractals, graphics, and mathematics education by Michael Frame( Book )

10 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 573 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Fractal geometry is a recent addition to the collection of mathematical tools for describing nature and the works of Man. It made possible for the first time a national study of roughness. Fractals are encountered in mathematics and many natural sciences, but also in finance and in art, music and literature most often without being consciously included by anyone. Therefore, fractals interconnect the arts and the natural and social sciences in many intrinsic ways. Rarely, if ever, are students exposed to anything like this in mathematics and science classes. This book collects essays about fractal's role in mathematics and science education. In the first four chapters, the editors address general issues. The next twelve chapters are invited case studies authored by educators who began years ago to use fractal geometry in classes that range from second grade elementary school, through public and private high schools, to state universities and private colleges. Some contributors survey literature and software they have used, others present detailed sample lessons. The chapter for Florida Atlantic University reports on a program training teachers in Florida. Many teachers developed fractals courses on their own in isolation from one another. This book is a token of how widespread such courses have become. The common themes that appear throughout mark the coming of age of this subject. - Publisher
Chaos under control : the art and science of complexity by David Peak( Book )

9 editions published between 1994 and 1998 in English and held by 431 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

You don't have to be fluent in math and physics to be curious about the dynamics of order and chaos and the geometry of fractals. Nor do you need to have special expertise to understand what these ideas reveal about the natural world. Chaos Under control introduces you to the rich concepts driving the new science of complexity. You will discover the principles behind some of the most talked-about research and findings of our time. You will see some astonishing examples and applications of these concepts and with the book's accompanying software, you can turn a Macintosh computer into a window of discovery, through which you can watch fractal and chaotic phenomena come to life visually
Fractal worlds : grown, built, and imagined by Michael Frame( Book )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 144 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Fractal geometry is a uniquely fascinating area of mathematics, exhibited by a range of shapes that exist in the natural world, from a simple broccoli floret to a majestic mountain range. In this essential primer, mathematician Michael Frame--a close collaborator with Benoit Mandelbrot, the founder of fractal geometry--and poet Amelia Urry explore the amazing world of fractals as they appear in nature, art, medicine, and technology. Frame and Urry offer new insights into such familiar topics as measuring fractal complexity by dimension and the life and work of Mandelbrot. In addition, they delve into less-known areas: fractals with memory, the Mandelbrot set in four dimensions, fractals in literature, and more. An inviting introduction to an enthralling subject, this comprehensive volume is ideal for learning and teaching." -- Back cover

A Comparison of Product Realization Frameworks( )

1 edition published in 1993 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1991 DoD established seven key science and technology thrust areas to assist in planning for investment in defense technology. The goals of Thrust 7 are to develop new industrial capabilities that will lower product unit costs and life-cycle costs, shorten the lead time in design and manufacture of products, and increase product quality. This document reviews a set of software products, applications and standards which are potential components of a DoD thrust 7 product realization infrastructure to support design and manufacturing activities for the Advanced Technology Demonstrations (ATDs). This study is a quick sampling of software products and frameworks and is not intended to be either complete or comprehensive. The reviewed frameworks were each designed to meet the needs of a specific engineering discipline. No final recommendations or judgments about particular frameworks were made since a rigorous and detailed analysis of requirements has not been performed. None of the reviewed frameworks met all of the perceived needs for a Thrust 7 and ATD framework, such as the need to design and analyze ATD products both within and across engineering disciplines. The best option for obtaining a product realization framework to accommodate the Thrust 7 needs appears to be the federation of multiple existing framework technologies to achieve the needed capabilities. Future work should include the extension of this study to cover all relevant frameworks and associated technology. The Thrust 7 ATD requirements should be analyzed in order to properly recommend a framework that meets those requirements
A Survey of Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) Contractor and Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) Software Engineering Environments (SEEs)( )

1 edition published in 1993 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This annotated briefing describes the results of a survey of Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) contractor software engineering environments (SEEs). It also reports the current status of selected commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) SEEs that employ a general interoperability component such as a data repository or an intercommunication tool. The purpose of this briefing is to aid the BMD Organization (BMDO) in evaluating SEE-related risk mitigation. Contractor information was derived from one-on-one interviews with program offices or contractors for BMD system elements. COTS SEE information was derived from hands-on demonstrations of the products. The conclusions of this briefing are that more than 230 different products are now being used for BMD software development
