2 editions published in 1922 in German and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Two brothers inherit their father's farm. Peter is attached to the land, Johannes, an ambitious dreamer, becomes secretary to Count Rudenberg, the owner of a vast estate. After the Count's death Johannes marries Helga, the Count's widow. He is obsessed with gaining possession of 'the burning acre', a rich source of oil. But Helga sells the field to Peter who is unaware of its potential value. This rural drama, praised at the time for its psychological realism, was long thought to be lost. In a manner comparable to films by his Swedish contemporaries Sjostrom and Stiller, Murnau brings a poetic dimension to landscape and atmosphere, to interiors with staging in depth, the movement of the characters striking what he called 'dramatic chords in space'
