Ray is an ex-convict who is married to Frenchy, a former stripper. Ray concocts a scheme to rob a bank by digging a tunnel from a defunct pizza place next door. As a cover, Frenchy opens a cookie shop in the storefront while Ray digs in the back. Ray's burglary is a failure, but Frenchy's cookies are a rousing success, and within a year the store has spawned a nationwide franchise that makes both rich. Mit einer 180 Grad Wendung kehrt Allen der Figur des jüdischen Intellektuellen den Rücken und spielt Ray, einen einfach gestrickten Ex-Ganoven, der nicht einmal einen Job als Tellerwäscher behalten kann und demzufolge ununterbrochen von seiner Frau Frenchy (Tracy Ullman) unterstützt werden muss. Als Ray ihr seinen Plan unterbreitet, zum Schein ein Geschäft neben einer Bank anzumieten, um einen Tunnel zu graben und den Tresor auszuräumen, ist Frenchy gelinde gesagt skeptisch. Ihre gesamten Ersparnisse in einen halbgaren, illegalen Plan zu investieren, erscheint ihr zu riskant. Erst recht, nachdem sie Rays drei dümmliche Partner kennen gelernt hat (Michael Rapaport, Jon Lovitz und Tony Darrow, allesamt ausgesprochen witzig) und erfährt, dass sie diejenige ist, die die Tarnung liefern soll, indem sie einen Plätzchen-Laden eröffnet. Er verlässt Hattie und heiratet wenig später überraschend die glamouröse Blanche (Uma Thurman, Foto), eine halbseidene Möchtegern-Schriftstellerin. Als Emmett Blanche inflagranti mit dem zwielichtigen Leibwächter Al Torrio (Anthony LaPaglia) erwischt, verliert er gänzlich den Boden unter den Füßen.
