The document concerns the controversy over Naphtali Wessely's pamphlet "Devre Shalom ṿe-Emet" in which he approved of the Austrian Emperor Joseph the Second's plan for the secular education of Jewish children. The Rabbis Ezekiel Landau and David ben Nathan of Lissa wrote against the plan and asked Zevi Hirsch Levin, who was the Rabbi of Berlin, to join them. However, the Jewish enlightened of Berlin disapproved of his act and complained to the local authorities. Rabbi Levin could not handle the pressure of both sides left Berlin in the middle of the conflict without warning. Levin left a letter of resignation to the leaders of the community that they were to open six days after his departure. The letter, a copy of which is our Ms., is an explanation for his act of resigning and leaving Berlin
