Struck by the fact that the average Swede knows more about, say, the Kurds than the Sami of Lapland, Jarl made this portrait of a 12-year-old Lapp boy. City-bred youngsters of the same age can't help but marvel at the sense of community and connection to nature that their Sami contemporaries experience. Javna is attends the Sami school in Kiruna, Sweden's northernmost city. And although dust from Chernobyl has sifted down over the entire region, and although times have changed, Javna has only one dream: he is going to keep reindeer; in the year 2000

"They call us misfits follows a group of teenagers as they become recipients, then victims, of Sweden's welfare-state economy. The group eschews traditional social values, engaging in selling drugs and smugly criticizing those who adhere to a schedule and a steady job. This documentary-style film interviews young people who feel disenfranchised and out of place in the world but show little if any ambition to improve their station in life. They willingly speak of their future hopes, providing they have any, and their childhood experiences which led to their present situation and philosophical beliefs."

"It's been ten years, and what you suspected at the end of They call us misfits has become a reality: Stoffe didn't make it. During the filming of A decent life he died of a heroin overdose. It was a hard blow for Stefan Jarl, who had been making this film primarily to try to save Stoffe's life. If They call us misfits was a straightforward documentary about a generation adrift, then A decent life is a complex portrait of the same generation on its way to frightening collective suicide, where the weapon is a syringe full of heroin."
