"Götz Friedrich's 1970s production scandalized the Bayreuth old guard while revealing Tannhäuser's revolutionary qualities to a new age of Wagner lovers. 'Davis's conducting is nothing short of magnificent, while the singing is truly on a festival level' (New York Daily News). 'The performances throughout are superb-- Jones is stunningly effective.' (New York Times). 'In Jürgen Rose's beautiful settings-- an excellent introduction to a new approach to Wagner's world' (Le Quotidien de Paris)"--Container
Tannhäuser : opera in three acts by Richard Wagner( Visual )

18 editions published between 1978 and 2008 in 3 languages and held by 92 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Tannhäuser, the knight minstrel, has yielded to the pleasures of the mountain of Venus. He now calls on the Virgin's help to escape them. Meeting his former friends, he is persuaded by Wolfram to return to Wartburg. In the Wartburg's hall of song, Tannhäuser's beloved, Elisabeth, and her father the Landgrave await the assembly of knights for a contest of song. As the contest proeceeds, Tannhäuser is scornful of the feeble love songs offered and he sings pasionately of the delights of Venusberg to the horror of all assembled. The Langrave orders him on a pilgimage to Rome to seek absolution from the Pope. However, later, Wolfram meets Tannhäuser who has been told that his chances of pardon are as likely as the flowering of the Pope's staff. Tannhäuser decides to return to Venusberg but a funeral procession bearing the bier of Elisabeth who has died of grief comes from the Wartburg. A band of pilgrims brings the papal staff, which is now in flower. Elisabeth's prayers have redeemed Tannhäuser
