Ibn Ḥazm of Cordoba : the life and works of a controversial thinker by Camilla Adang( )

14 editions published between 2012 and 2013 in English and held by 1,180 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This volume represents the state of the art in research on the controversial Muslim legal scholar, theologian and man of letters Ibn Ḥazm of Cordoba (d. 456/1064), who is widely regarded as one of the most brilliant minds of Islamic Spain. Remembered mostly for his charming treatise on love, he was first and foremost a fierce polemicist who was much criticized for his idiosyncratic views and his abrasive language. Insisting that the sacred sources of Islam are to be understood in their outward sense and that it is only the Prophet Mu?ammad whose example may be followed, Ibn Ḥazm alienated himself from his peers. As a result, his books were burned and he was forced to withdraw from public life."--Back cover

18 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in Arabic and English and held by 1,122 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Umayyads, the first dynasty of Islam, ruled over a vast empire from their central province of Syria, providing a line of caliphs from 661 to 750. Another branch later ruled in al-Andalus Islamic Spain from 756 to 1031, ruling first as emirs and then as caliphs themselves. This book is the first to bring together studies of this far-flung family and treat it not as two unrelated caliphates but as a single enterprise. Yet for all that historians have made note of Umayyad accomplishments in the Near East and al-Andalus, Umayyad legacies what later generations made of these caliphs and their achievements are poorly understood. Building on new interest in the study of memory and Islamic historiography and including interdisciplinary perspectives from Arabic literature, art, and archaeology, this book highlights Umayyad achievements and the shaping of our knowledge of the Umayyad past
Muslim writers on Judaism and the Hebrew Bible : from Ibn Rabban to Ibn Hazm by Camilla Adang( Book )

15 editions published between 1993 and 1996 in English and German and held by 299 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Muslim Writers on Judaism and the Hebrew Bible deals with the way in which Judaism and its holy scriptures were viewed by nine medieval Muslim writers representing different genres of Arabic literature: Ibn Rabban al-Tabari, Ibn Qutayba, al-Ya'qubi, Abu Ja'far al-Tabari, al-Mas'udi, al-Maqdisi, al-Baqillani, al-Biruni and Ibn Hazm. After an introductory chapter on the reception of Biblical materials in early Islam and a presentation of the authors under review, the book focuses on their knowledge of Judaism and the text of the Hebrew Bible, and subsequently discusses issues frequently debated between Muslims and Jews, namely, the claim that the Torah contains references to Muhammad, and the assertion that the Torah has been both abrogated and falsified. In the appendix, texts by Ibn Qutayba and al-Maqdisi are offered for the first time in an English translation."--BOOK JACKET

Abū Muḥammad b. al-Qurṭubī versus Abū ʿAlī al-Rundī: An Andalusī Polemic on the Modes of Transmission of the Qur'an( )

2 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

<Title><x>Abstract</x></title>This contribution deals with Abū ʿAlī al-Rundī's (d. 616/1219) refutation of Abū Muḥammad b. al-Qurṭubī's (d. 611/1214) views on the modes of transmission of the Qur'an and theqirāʾāt(‘variant readings’). It is the last in a series of texts on this topic included by Aḥmad al-Wansharīsī (d. 914/1509) in his famousfatwācollection,al-Miʿyār al-muʿrib. The two Andalusī scholars had similar academic profiles and vied for recognition as the foremost authority on Qur'an readings in Malaga, which during the Almohad period was home to a large number of eminentʿulamāʾ. Asked whether he thought that the Qur'an, in its variant readings, should be transmitted with anisnād, from one person to the next, Ibn al-Qurṭubī had apparently replied in the affirmative. In the text under discussion, al-Rundī aims to destroy the arguments of his arch-rival, whom he describes in scathing terms. He argues that the Qur'an has always been transmitted throughtawātur(that is, by a multitude of trustworthy people) which alone guarantees sound knowledge. The refutation not only reflects the state of Qur'anic Studies in al-Andalus at the time, but also the acrimonious relations between two important scholars

The Ẓāhirīs : their doctrine and their history : a contribution to the history of Islamic theology by Ignác Goldziher( Book )

2 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ignaz Goldziher wrote his book ‘Die Zahiriten’ in 1883. The English translation of this standard work on Islamic jurisprudence appeared in 1971. The book has been in print ever since. This new edition in the Brill Classics in Islam series shows that The Ẓāhirīs has not lost any of its actuality. The individual that adheres to the principles of madhhab al-Ẓāhir, the Islamic legal school, is called Ẓāhirī. Goldziher gives an extensive presentation of the Ẓāhirīte school, its doctrine and the position of its representatives within orthodox Islam. Ẓāhirism accepts only the facts clearly revealed by sensible, rational and linguistic intuitions, controlled and corroborated by Qurʾānic revelation. This history of Islamic theology sheds light on the Ẓāhirīte legal interpretation vis-à-vis other legal schools and gives an interesting insight in questions like ‘are all prescriptions and prohibitions in Islamic law commanded or forbidden?’ (Publisher)
