City as loft : adaptive reuse as a resource for sustainable urban development by Martina Baum ( Book )
7 editions published between 2012 and 2013 in English and held by 126 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
It's always about each specific location, the people, and a vision. This is the message distilled from these portraits of 30 reused industrial areas. In a wide variety of places all round the globe, reinterpretations of the legacy of the industrial age are releasing tremendous potential energy and creativity - in the USA, Russia, Brazil and China just as much as in Europe. The book examines the background, protagonists and concepts involved and shows various strategies for reuse. In essays and interviews, specialists from both the theoretical and practical fields explain their findings and experiences. Dutch book designer Joost Grootens, well known for his self-explanatory 'infographics', has given the 30 projects a visual form allowing fascinating comparisons

Grand urban rules by Alex Lehnerer ( Book )
1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 76 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Grand Urban Rules offers a compilation and discussion of significant rules invented and implemented by European, North American, and Asian cities. The reader does not only get an overview of the functionality and repercussions of these rule sets but also gains insight into the context and situation of the specific city through the lens of rule-based governance: a citys code as the inverted, abstracted and extracted image of a citys actual situation. Setting standards is first and foremost a cultural act. We map cities by their rules! The publication is based on a database of approximately 100 relevant urban rules researched over the past three years at the ETH Zurich. These rules describe built form with regard to physical characteristics, qualities, and consequences as well as the distribution of program, density, urban performance, and aesthetics."--Publisher's description
Charter of Dubai : a manifesto of critical urban transformation by Sabine Müller ( Book )
1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 74 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The man-made peninsular Palm Jumeirah on the coast of Dubai is a superlative project and an exemplary model for the Gated Communities and Resorts that have developed worldwide in property bubbles. The development may be spectacular, but cannot conceal the fact that the former marketing success story is faced with serious problems. How can an isolated anti-urban exclave be opened up and integrated? Can issues concerning networking, the public sphere and affordable housing, as well as climate change adaptation, biodiversity and the supply of energy be resolved through targeted tactical interventions? The Charter of Dubai is a manifesto of critical urban transformation. It subversively encourages the conversion of isolated quarters into a socially and ecologically open urban space. The detailed catalog of the individual measures, richly illustrated with clear sketches and references, make the Charter a handbook for urban transformation that takes social and ecological aspects into account

2 editions published in 2009 in Dutch and held by 23 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Red Apple is a stunning new apartment complex on Wijnhaven Island. The slender high-rise section forms a succinct contribution to the Rotterdam skyline. In addition, the building comprises a horizontal wedge-shaped structure, which includes a spacious atrium. The groundfloor contains public amenities situated round an arcade. The name Red Apple is derived from the vivid red colour of the aluminium panels in the façade, but also refers to the historical function of the location as a place where apples used to be transshipped. It is obviously also a reference to the high-rise capital New York. This publication gives a written and visual account of the history of the area, the vision concerning the urban development of Wijnhaven Island and the origin of this remarkable building
