Semi-biographical story of jazz coronet player Loring "Red" Nichols and his band, The five pennies. Begins as Nichols arrives in New York City in 1924 and joins Wil Paradise's dance band. There he befriends fellow bandmember Tony Valani, gets fixed up with singer and future wife Bobbie Meredith, and meets jazz great Louis Armstrong. After marrying Bobbie, Nichols' desire to play Dixieland music and unwillingness to conform to Paradise's popular style get him fired. Nichols joins a disastrous series of radio orchestras until former bandmembers Valani, Dorsey, Tough, Schutt, and Miller see the appeal of New Orleans-style jazz and form a new band with Nichols, The five pennies. While the band enjoys success--including a stint playing music for college dances--Bobbie and Nichols have a baby daugher Dorothy. Although Dorothy spends her early years on the road touring with the band, concerns about her schooling lead to her basic abandonment at a boarding school. When she contracts polio, Nichols is so devastated that he quits music, takes a job in a shipyard, and devotes his life to Dorothy's recovery. As a teenager, Dorothy discovers her father's old records and realizes his sacrifice. She and Bobbie talk Nichols into attempting a musical comeback, which appears to be a failure until the old band and other friends, including Armstrong, join in a rousing finale
