Done into dance : Isadora Duncan in America by Ann Daly( Book )

27 editions published between 1993 and 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 709 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Invoking Nature as the ultimate origin of her body, Duncan appropriated the authority of its assumedly eternal, universal truth. She enacted America's romantic longing for a pre-industrial life in Nature. Through the expressive body, she made visible the inner stirrings of the soul. The dancing body, framed most carefully as a moral practice, was reconstructed as the nexus of science, nature, art, and metaphysics. Eventually, Duncan's became an explicit body politic, when she directly played out on stage the patriotism that accompanied the Great War, and later on, when she indirectly took up the Soviet cause. As for the female body, Duncan took advantage of its marginality in order to make of it a symbol of cultural subversion
Critical gestures : writings on dance and culture by Ann Daly( Book )

9 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 368 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Ann Daly ranks among the most insightful, articulate dance critics and scholars writing today. Spanning the divide between journalism and scholarship, this collection offers a double-sighted view of dance in America from 1986 to the present, documenting the shift in experimental dance from formal to social concerns, and recording the expansion of dance studies in the academy from historical documentation to cultural criticism. Daly examines performance art and visual art as they relate to and influence dance, with a look at the intersection of dance and history. Gender is the subject of the final section of the book. More than 80 reviews, features, essays, interviews and scholarly articles -- including extended considerations of Pina Bausch, Deborah Hay, Bill T. Jones and Ralph Lemon -- were originally published in venues ranging from High Performance to The New York Times to TDR: A Journal of Performance Studies."--Publisher's description

Meta- and pooled analyses of the effects of glutathione S-transferase M1 polymorphisms and smoking on lung cancer risk( )

1 edition published in 2002 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Susceptibility to lung cancer may in part be attributable to inter-individual variability in metabolic activation or detoxification of tobacco carcinogens. The glutathione S-transferase M1 (GSTM1) genetic polymorphism has been extensively studied in this context; two recent meta-analyses of case-control studies suggested an association between GSTM1 deletion and lung cancer. At least 15 studies have been published after these overviews. We undertook a newmeta-analysis to summarize the results of 43 published case-control studiesincluding>18 000 individuals. A slight excess of risk of lung cancer for individuals with the GSTM1 null genotype was found (odds ratio (OR) = 1.17, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.07-1.27). No evidence of publication biaswas found (P = 0.4), however, it is not easy to estimate the extent of such bias and we cannot rule out some degree of publication bias in our results. A pooled analysis of the original data of about 9500 subjects involved in 21 case-control studies from the International Collaborative Studyon Genetic Susceptibility to Environmental Carcinogens (GSEC) data set was performed to assess the role of GSTM1 genotype as a modifier of the effectof smoking on lung cancer risk with adequate power. Analyses revealed noevidence of increased risk of lung cancer among carriers of the GSTM1 null genotype (age-, gender- and center-adjusted OR = 1.08, 95% CI 0.98-1.18) and no evidence of interaction between GSTM1 genotype and either smoking status orcumulative tobacco consumption
