Ein Porträt von May Ayim (1960-1996), der ghanaisch-deutschen Dichterin, Wissenschaftlerin und politischen Persönlichkeit. May Ayim war eine der Vorreiterinnen der Schwarzen Deutschen Bewegung, die mit ihrer Forschung zur Geschichte und Gegenwart Afro-Deutscher und mit ihrer politischen Lyrik im In- und Ausland bekannt wurde. Im Alter von 36 Jahren nahm sie sich das Leben. May Ayim schrieb sich ein in die Tradition des Sprechgesangs und fühlte sich mit anderen schwarzen DichterInnen der Diaspora stark verbunden. Mit einer Art Rap-Dichtung fand sie eine ganz eigene Form der Mitteilung. Dichtung war für sie eine Möglichkeit, der weißen deutschen Gesellschaft den Spiegel vorzuhalten. Interviews und Gedichte erzählen von der Suche nach Identität, wie und warum der Begriff afro-deutsch entstanden ist und wie eine junge schwarze Frau die sogenannte Wiedervereinigung erlebt. Eine spannende Auseinandersetzung mit deutscher Gegenwart
