The Berlin Group and the philosophy of logical empiricism by Nikolay Milkov( )

13 editions published between 2012 and 2013 in English and held by 403 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Berlin Group for scientific philosophy was active between 1928 and 1933 and was closely related to the Vienna Circle. In 1930, the leaders of the two Groups, Hans Reichenbach and Rudolf Carnap, launched the journal Erkenntnis. However, between the Berlin Group and the Vienna Circle, there was not only close relatedness but also significant difference. Above all, while the Berlin Group explored philosophical problems of the actual practice of science, the Vienna Circle, closely following Wittgenstein, was more interested in problems of the language of science. The book includes first discussion ever (in three chapters) on Walter Dubislav's logic and philosophy. Two chapters are devoted to another author scarcely explored in English, Kurt Grelling, and another one to Paul Oppenheim who became an important figure in the philosophy of science in the USA in the 1940s-1960s. Finally, the book discusses the precursor of the Nord-German tradition of scientific philosophy, Jacob Friedrich Fries
A hundred years of English philosophy by Nikolay Milkov( Book )

2 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 145 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The chief reason for adopting this approach was the wish to first of all cover as many of the problems discussed by them as possible, and secondly to view these problems in juxtaposition. The study was thus conceived as a comprehensive and most objective review of the history of analytical philosophy as practised in England. The hope is that it will serve as a reference book covering all the central problems discussed by these seven authors."--Jacket

Ziele und wege der heutigen naturphilosophie by Hans Reichenbach( Book )

10 editions published between 2011 and 2017 in German and English and held by 101 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Bertrand Russell's life and legacy( Book )

2 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 45 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Almost five decades after his death, there is still ample reason to pay attention to the life and legacy of Bertrand Russell. This is true not only because of his role as one of the founders of analytic philosophy, but also because of his important place in twentieth-century history as an educator, public intellectual, critic of organized religion, humanist, and peace activist. The papers in this anthology explore Russell's life and legacy from a wide variety of perspectives. This is altogether fitting, given the many-sided nature of Russell, his life, and his work. The first section of the book considers Russell the man, and draws lessons from Russell's complicated personal life. The second examines Russell the philosopher, and the philosophical world within which his work was embedded. The third scrutinizes Russell the atheist and critic of organized religion, inquiring which parts of his critical stance are worth emulating today. The final section revisits Russell the political activist; it directs an eye both at Russell's own long career of peace activism, but also at his place in a highly political family traditionof which he was justifiably proud. This book thus constitutes an invitation, if one were needed, to the world of Bertrand Russell. Those new to Russell, but with an interest in biography, philosophy, religion, or politics, will hopefully find something to learn here. This may spark an interest in learning more about Russell neophyte. The book sheds fresh light on a number of topics central to Russell studies - his connections to other philosophers, for example. Scholars well-versed in Russell studies will enjoy grappling with the treatment given to these topics here. -- from dust jacket
A hundred years of English philosophy by Nikolay Milkov( Book )

8 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 33 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is a historical investigation of the leading philosophical movement in England in the twentieth century. In seven chapters, the intellectual development of the most prominent representatives of analytic philosophy-Moore, Russell and Wittgenstein in Cambridge, and Ryle, Austin, Strawson and Dummett in Oxford-is traced. The book does not aim, however, at delivering a story. This means, above all, that generalisations and conclusions are reduced to a minimum-an approach adopted in an endeavour to avert the danger of subjectivism that interpreting the philosophers under scrutiny would impose. My hope is that by following this aproach, my inves tigation will stimulate readers to make their own generalisations and conclusions on the basis of the objectively presented data. Instead, my aim is to articulate a flawless, comprehensive description of the phil osophical texts of the seven most significant analytic philosophers in England in the twentieth century. For this purpose, all their articles and books have been sifted through in order to pick out the most representative parts. For obvious reasons, only the chapters on Russell and Wittgenstein, and-to a lesser extent-the chapter on Moore, are more theoretical

Eine Kritik des Supervaluationismus >>You do not improve a bad idea by iterating it<< = A review of Supervaluationism : >>You do not improve a bad idea by iterating it<< by Alexander Nowak( )

1 edition published in 2015 in German and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

- The text presents the formal theory of supervaluationism and gives a systematical review. Its sketchy origins in the fifties dealing with the vagueness of the language of science, its first formalization for the aims of the free logic and its modern application in the formalization of semantic vagueness are discussed in terms of formal and philosophical properties of the various versions of the theory. The main intention is to show the ultimate failure of all supervaluationistic semantics in giving a proper formalization of semantic vagueness: With the help of Mark Sainsburys arguments against the use of set-theoretic semantics for this purpose, it is shown that we end up either drawing sharp boundaries where there ought to be none, or postulating so called vague sets without having any formal basis for these kind of objects
