The papers of painter and muralist Gifford Beal measure 5 linear feet and date from 1889 to 2001. The bulk of the collection consists of artwork; some correspondence, printed matter, pictorial subject files, photographs, and writings are also found. Works of art are primarily sketches and sketchbooks in a wide variety of media. Seventy-six sketchbooks are found. Among the loose sketches are 28 oil paintings on wood board or panel, and fourteen large pastel drawings on canvas depicting dancing figures in a romantic style. Artwork by other artists in the collection include prints by Arthur B. Davies, Rockwell Kent, and Denys Wortman

Cloth ribbon, in marine blue, with two narrow gold vertical stripes down each side, is sewn to a bronze pin bar, with a clasp pin at back for attachment. Ribbon suspends, with metal loop, a heavy bronze medallion with attached bronze fleur-de-lis emblem at top for holding loop. Medallion is a bronze compass rose featuring an eagle, in relief, on obverse. Eagle has wings spread, flying downward (toward the left) with bolt of lightning in each of its talons. Verso: The points of the compass rose are modeled with a central circular elevated surface for inscription. Engraved in gold, "LT. (JG) NORMAN F.; VANDIVIER; USNR; JUNE 4-6, 1942". Accompanying case has dark green faux leather paper exterior with hinged back and ivory colored satin interior lining. A removable black velvet liner tray holds the medal and accompanying ribbon (R 2449) in place
