Le batteur Brian Blade n'en est pas à son premier coup d'essai depuis 1994 (et sa participation au quartet de Joshua Redman avec pour compagnons de rythmique Brad Mehldau et Christian McBride). Depuis, Blade n'a cessé de participer aux musiques les plus créatives, notamment dans le prodigieux quartet de recherche de Wayne Shorter où sa part est importante, mais jouant aussi derrière Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris. Ses propres disques, surtout Perceptual (Blue Note, 2000), révèlent un compositeur et un leader qui trace sa voie avec sensibilité en compagnie de jeunes musiciens parmi lesquels le guitariste Kurt Rosenwinkel est le plus notoire et le plus influent. Mais il ne faut pas méconnaître le rôle du claviériste Jon Cowherd qui codirige avec Blade le Fellowship Band et lui donne son identité harmonique, quelque part entre le Pat Metheny Band et des groupes plus aventureux. Les compositions de Season of Changes sont pour la plupart des morceaux d'atmosphère, souvent de couleurs nocturnes, avec des grooves intenses, des changements d'accords (<< changes >>) qui sont comme des variations de lumière sur des paysages vacants, offerts à la rêverie. D'autres sont plus tourmentées, avec des remous puissants à la batterie. Le tout raconte une histoire, pleine de mystères, de vues surprenantes, de sonorités écorchées chez les soufflants (Myron Walden au sax alto, Melvin Butler au ténor). Un disque résolument différent.
