Ana Mendieta : earth body : sculpture and performance, 1972-1985 by Olga M Viso( Book )

24 editions published between 2004 and 2008 in English and held by 575 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book traces Ana Mendieta's (1948-85) development from the early performance-based works made as a student at the University of Iowa, where she was grounded in the conceptual and body-oriented practices of the 1960s and 1970s, to the creation of independent sculptures and objects in the early 1980s made with fragile, earthen materials. Rooted in nature and in the body, Mendieta's art was inflected by personal identity and femininity, and distinguished by its insistent hybridity. Her earth-body works, or Silueta Series (silhouette series), fused aspects of conceptual, process, performance, body, feminist, and land art. While contributing significantly to these varied dialogues, her work does not fit neatly within any of the accepted terms used to describe artistic activity in the decade." "Born in Havana, Cuba, Mendieta came to the United States as a twelve-year-old political refugee. Her personal and professional development was greatly informed by the painful experience of exile as well as the cross-fertilization of Caribbean and North American values. While deeply rooted in her personal experience, Mendieta's art reveals a passionate desire to connect with a wider, collective human heritage. Her aim to unravel layers of individual and social history and unmask latent ethnic, cultural, and gender biases in society, was to foster greater self-awareness and comprehension of the complex diversity of humanity. It is for this reason that her humble yet prolific production as an artist continues to be relevant today. Its meaning has particular resonance in a global society struggling to grasp the overwhelming points of correspondences and differences between individual, nation, and culture."--Jacket
Regarding beauty : a view of the late twentieth century by Neal David Benezra( Book )

14 editions published in 1999 in English and German and held by 446 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The lavishly illustrated Regarding Beauty surveys late twentieth-century Western art to address why the timeless notion of beauty has recently been so hotly contested and, in the 1980s and 1990s in particular, so highly politicized. Are there accepted standards of beauty, or does beauty exist solely in the mind? Is beauty eternal, or a fleeting experience subject to changing fashion and tastes? Can one find beauty in ugliness? Hirshhorn Museum curators Neal Benezra and Olga M. Viso, analytical philosopher Arthur C. Danto, and Haus der Kunst curator Hubertus Gassner contribute essays regarding these questions in this volume, which accompanies an exhibition of approximately eighty paintings, sculptures, and installations by thirty-four artists. Emphasizing parallel approaches rather than trends or movements, illustrations juxtapose works by well-known Europeans and Americans of the past with the creations of a broad and diverse group of international contemporary artists to dramatize the fertile field of beauty as it relates to the figure, landscape, and abstraction. Regarding Beauty argues that beauty has not disappeared from the dialog of art and that, on the contrary, it has persisted as an essential element in the evolution of art as the 20th century passes into history

Unseen Mendieta : the unpublished works of Ana Mendieta by Olga M Viso( Book )

8 editions published in 2008 in English and Spanish and held by 334 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Ana Mendieta (1948-1985) produced some of the most compelling images of body- and identity-oriented art of the 1970s. The tracks made by the artist dragging her blood-covered arms down a wall; the pigment-filled void of her silhouette pressed into a sandy beach, consumed by advancing waves; her bodily outline drawn by ignited gunpowder on the earth or set alight with fireworks against the night sky; and fetishistic goddess shapes molded in soil, adorned with flowers, resound in the histories of feminist art, performance and land art, and late twentieth-century Latin American art." "Despite major survey exhibitions by museums in the United States, Europe, and Latin America over the last decade, however, a large body of work by Mendieta remains unknown. Hundreds of 35 mm slides in the artist's personal archive, including many that document her extensive Silueta series - her signature "earth-body works" created in the landscapes of Mexico, Iowa, upstate New York, and Cuba between 1973 and 1981 - remain unpublished and are unknown even to the most knowledgeable of contemporary art scholars. In addition to the slide works published in this volume for the first time, there are selections from her many black-and-white photographic negatives and contact sheets, documenting unknown sculptural works produced in the early 1980s, as well as revealing pages from the artist's diaristic sketchbooks."--Jacket

Jeff Wall by Kerry Brougher( Book )

3 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Jeff Wall is foremost among the artists who since the late 1960s have brought photography to the forefront of contemporary art. This revised and expanded edition of the definitive monograph on the Canadian artist, first published in 1996, includes a new fully illustrated essay on Wall's recent work by the French historian of art and photography Jean-Fran+ois Chevrier, in addition to the artist's recent writings. Describing himself as 'a painter of modern life', Wall produces huge transparencies mounted onto light boxes which diffuse a brilliant glow through his photographs of contemporary urban scenes and 'constructed' social situations. These images employ the latest technology to create tableaux which are evocative of subjects ranging from Hollywood cinema to nineteenth-century history painting. When installed they evoke both the seduction of the cinema screen and the physical presence of minimalist sculptures. Wall engages at a sophisticated level with theories of representation both as an artist and as a theoretical writer on contemporary art and culture. Major surveys of his work have been presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (1995); the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume, Paris (1995); the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London (1996), and the Mus+e d'Art Contemporain, Montreal (1999)
