Microfilm of two diaries kept by William Henry Powell and two letters written by George Armstrong Custer. The first of the diaries, 4 Oct 1855 to 28 Dec 1858, details Powell's experiences aboard the USS San Jacinto during its diplomatic expedition to China and Japan and its actions during the Second Opium War. The earlier diary describes a trip by Powell to England during the winter of 1851-1852. The two letters, dated 7 April and 5 May 1860, were written by Custer while training as a cadet at West Point to his friend John Wesley Cunningham in New Rumley, Ohio
