Zero to one : notes on startups, or how to build the future by Peter A Thiel( Book )

36 editions published between 2014 and 2015 in 8 languages and held by 1,684 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Thiel starts from the bold premise that we live in an age of technological stagnation, even if we're too distracted by our new mobile devices to notice. Progress has stalled in every industry except computers, and globalization is hardly the revolution people think it is. It's true that the world can get marginally richer by building new copies of old inventions, making horizontal progress from "1 to n." But true innovators have nothing to copy. The most valuable companies of the future will make vertical progress from "0 to 1," creating entirely new industries and products that have never existed before. Zero to One is about how to build these companies. Tomorrow's champions will not win by competing ruthlessly in today's marketplace. They will escape competition altogether, because their businesses will be unique. In today's post-internet bubble world, conventional wisdom dictates that all the good ideas are taken, and the economy becomes a tournament in which everyone competes to reach the top. Zero to One shows how to quit the zero-sum tournament by finding an untapped market, creating a new product, and quickly scaling up a monopoly business that captures lasting value. Planning an escape from competition is essential for every business and every individual, not just for technology startups. The greatest secret of the modern era is that there are still unique frontiers to explore and new problems to solve. Zero to One shows how to pursue them using the most important, most difficult, and most underrated skill in every job or industry: thinking for yourself"--

Is college worth the cost? Groundbreaking filmmaker Andrew Rossi asks the critical question about the value of higher education, revealing how colleges have come to embrace a business model that often promotes expansion over quality learning. With student-loan debt now over the one trillion dollar mark, the once-great American institution is at a breaking point. The film explores the current education crisis from the halls of Harvard, to community colleges, to online learning
The diversity myth : "multiculturalism" and the politics of intolerance at Stanford by David O Sacks( Book )

12 editions published between 1995 and 1998 in English and held by 607 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The "diversity myth" is the myth that universities are doing a good job promoting diversity on campus. Universities in America have promoted this "diversity myth" which belies the actual state of affairs in the nation's schools. Instead, universities have fostered conformity on campus, and stifled true diversity. This document, sponsored by the Independent Institute, uses Stanford University as a case study, and addresses the need for universities to rethink their methods of promoting diversity. It describes examples from both inside college and university campuses and in the outside world that suggest that economic diversity, political diversity, racial diversity, and intellectual diversity has decreased in recent years. Curriculum changes brought about to embrace multiculturalism have in fact eroded traditional academic standards, as they have sought to question traditional academia's focus on Western works and embrace multiculturalism. The authors suggest that only on an individual basis can the problems that have developed as a result of excessive political correctness in academia be solved. Elizabeth Fox-Genovese provides the foreword for this, the second edition. (Ab)

5 editions published in 2014 in German and held by 60 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Er zeigt: Wahre Innovation entsteht nicht horizontal, sondern sprunghaft - from Zero to One.

Too many kids go to college( Visual )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Do too many people go to college? The belief that college is essential to reaching one's full potential is under fire. Student loan debt has surpassed credit card debt, unemployment for those with bachelor's degrees is at an all-time high, and entrepreneurs like the founders of Microsoft and Facebook prove that extraordinary success is possible without graduating college. But recent studies show that college is economically beneficial even to those whose jobs don't require it. Is it still the best way to ensure social mobility, or is America's love affair with higher education unjustified?
