This book is the first comprehensive survey of the work of Los Angeles-based artist Tim Hawkinson (b. 1960), whose ingenious constructions of found objects and everyday items have brought him widespread recognition as one of the most original sculptors working in America today. Known primarily for his large-scale kinetic and sound-producing works, such as the monumental Überorgan, Hawkinson has also created a bird skeleton from his own fingernail parings, a latex cast of his body inflated with air, and clocks fashioned from a Coke can. a manila envelope, and a toothpaste tube. His fantastical assemblages, which may include sculpture, painting, photography, drawing, or printmaking, suggest the profound strangeness of life, matter, and time. With 250 color illustrations and three insightful essays, along with the artist's commentary on more than 150 of his hugely varied works, Tim Hawkinson will prove a revelation to all those interested in contemporary art

A unique television series presenting 16 diverse artists working in the United States today, taking viewers behind the scenes--and beyond the museum or gallery experience--into artists' studios, homes, and communities to provide an intimate view of their lives, work, creative processes, and sources of inspiration. Themes provide a connective thread between profiles of three to five artists per program.

Art 21. time( Visual )

1 edition published in 2004 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The element of time is always present in our interaction with works of art, whether we sit to contemplate a painting for a few moments, stroll past a sculpture, or watch a video piece for its entire duration or cycle. Some works of art are time-based in that the viewer must experience them through the passage of time, as with music, while others refer to time through links or references to art history, our collective human history, or the timelessness of nature. For some, a work of art can make time stand still. This episode features work by Martin Puryear, Paul Pfeiffer, Vija Celmins and Tim Hawkinson

How do art and artists relate to temporality? Is art, can art, be timeless? How does art relate to our own experience of temporality? Time features the work of Martin Puryear, Paul Pfeiffer, Vija Celmins, and Tim Hawkinson. Martin Puryear is a sculptor whose minimalist works incorprate a range of materials. American sculptor, photographer and visual artist, Paul Pfeiffer, is known for his meticilous attention to detail, taking up to four months to film two minutes of footage. Much of his time-consuming work incorporates the use of found footage, which he painstakingly pieces together to great effect. Born in Latvia, but settling in the US from the age of ten, Vija Celmins is known for her photo-realistic paintings and drawings of natural environments and phenomena such as the ocean, spider webs, star fields and rocks. Tim Hawkinson is an American sculptor whose use of his own body has been understood as a form of self portraiture. His fascination music, notation, and the passing of time are also big themes in his work and Hawkinson is renowned for creating complex sculptural systems through surprisingly simple means

The 2002 accession includes audio and video recordings documenting the installation of Stuart Collection works, interviews with artists, and promotional materials. The 2005 accession includes 228 individual items, consisting chiefly of plans and proposals for Stuart Collection projects. Work by a total of 24 artists is included; eleven artists whose works were constructed, and thirteen artists whose proposals were not constructed. One artist, Richard Fleischner, appears in both categories. The greatest portion of materials are whiteprint or blueline print plans with specifications for a project's construction, although drawings, photographs, and other graphic materials are also present. Also included are audio and videorecordings of interviews, installations, and other events. Since Stuart Collection works are outdoors, and typically large scale, some artists employed large photographs, maps, or topographical surveys of a proposed site with additional artwork or transparent overlays illustrating features of the project
