Studying cosmological structure formation with numerical hydrodynamic simulations by J. Michael Owen( )

1 edition published in 1997 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This dissertation investigates the numerics and physics involved in incorporating a baryonic species into simulations of cosmological structure formation. I begin by describing a new numerical hydrodynamic technique known as Adaptive Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics, or ASPH. ASPH is a modified form of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), designed to allow resolution scales to adapt to locally anisotropic density evolution, thereby maximizing the potential resolution of a simulation
A community of scholars : impressions of the Institute for Advanced Study by Serge J-F Levy( Book )

3 editions published in 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This beautifully illustrated anthology celebrates eighty years of history and intellectual inquiry at the Institute for Advanced Study, one of the world's leading centers for theoretical research. Featuring essays by current and former members and faculty along with photographs by Serge J-F. Levy, this book captures the spirit of curiosity, freedom, and comradeship that is a hallmark of this unique community of scholars. Founded in 1930 in Princeton, New Jersey, the institute encourages and supports fundamental research in the sciences and humanities--the original, often speculative thinking that can transform how we understand our world. Albert Einstein was among the first in a long line of brilliant thinkers to be affiliated with the institute. They include Kurt Gdel, George Kennan, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Erwin Panofsky, Homer A. Thompson, John von Neumann, and Hermann Weyl. This volume offers an intimate portrait in words and images of a storied institution that might best be described as a true academic village. The personal reflections collected here - written by leading figures from across the disciplines - bring this exceptional academic institution and its history vibrantly to life. The contributors to this anthology are Sir Michael Atiyah, Chantal David, Freeman Dyson, Jane F. Fulcher, Peter Goddard, Barbara Kowalzig, Wolf Lepenies, Paul Moravec, Joan Wallach Scott, and David H. Weinberg

Biased galaxy formation and large scale structure by Andreas A Berlind( )

1 edition published in 2001 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The biased relation between the galaxy and mass distributions lies at the intersection of large scale structure in the universe and the process of galaxy formation. I study the nature of galaxy bias and its connections to galaxy clustering and galaxy formation physics
The hidden universe : dark energy, dark matter, baryons by Joseph Eugene McEwen( )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The universe is dominated by unknown elements, dark energy and dark matter. The mysterious nature of the universe is not limited to the dark components. The present day census of ordinary matter (baryons) in the universe is incomplete. This thesis present the work I have done to uncover the nature of dark energy and dark matter as well as understanding the baryon content in the local universe. Chapter 2 presents an analysis of the baryon content in the local universe as traced by X-ray absorption systems. Chapter 3 present the effects of streaming velocities on the baryon acoustic oscillation scale. Chapter 4 is introduces a new galaxy bias model, the environment dependent halo occupation distribution model. Chapter 5 presents a unique algorithm to compute convolution integrals in cosmological perturbation theory
The eighth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey : first data from SDSS-III by Hiroaki Aihara( Book )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

"The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) started a new phase in 2008 August, with new instrumentation and new surveys focused on Galactic structure and chemical evolution, measurements of the baryon oscillation feature in the clustering of galaxies and the quasar Ly[Greek letter alpha] forest, and a radial velocity search for planets around ~8000 stars. This paper describes the first data release of SDSS-III (and the eighth counting from the beginning of the SDSS). The release includes five-band imaging of roughly 5200 deg2 in the southern Galactic cap, bringing the total footprint of the SDSS imaging to 14,555 deg2, or over a third of the Celestial Sphere. All the imaging data have been reprocessed with an improved sky-subtraction algorithm and a final, self-consistent photometric recalibration and flat-field determination. This release also includes all data from the second phase of the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE-2), consisting of spectroscopy of approximately 118,000 stars at both high and low Galactic latitudes. All the more than half a million stellar spectra obtained with the SDSS spectrograph have been reprocessed through an improved stellar parameter pipeline, which has better determinationof metallicity for high-metallicity stars."
Reconstruction analysis of Galaxy Redshift Surveys by Vijay Krishna Narayanan( )

1 edition published in 1999 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

I present the results of reconstruction analysis of the PSCz catalog using 15 models, each consisting of a set of assumptions regarding the value of Wm and the bias between IRAS galaxies and mass. I find that gravitational instability of Gaussian primordial mass density fluctuations can account for the galaxy distribution in the PSCz catalog, at least for some plausible assumptions about the value of Wm and the biasing between IRAS galaxies and mass. However, unbiased models in which IRAS galaxies trace mass fail to reconstruct the PSCz catalog accurately, both for Wm = 0.4 and for Wm = 1. Low Wm models in which IRAS galaxies are antibiased with respect to the mass distribution are the most successful in reconstructing the PSCz catalog. Further, I find that reconstruction analysis is capable of discriminating between different types of biasing relations, and not just between different amplitude of the bias. In particular, a model with Wm = 0.4 and IRAS galaxies related to the mass distribution according to the predictions of a semi-analytic galaxy formation model is very successful in reproducing the properties of the PSCz galaxy distribution, while another model with very similar values of Wm and the amplitude of bias, but with a different biasing relation, is summarily rejected
Recovering a voice. West European Jewry after the Holocaust by David H Weinberg( Book )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

His multi-national study focuses on the efforts by the Jews of France, Belgium, and the Netherlands to reconstruct their lives after World War II. These efforts have largely been ignored, perhaps because the emphasis on assisting survivors in displaced persons camps and on developing Israel as the center of Jewish life after the Holocaust diverted attention from the struggle by Jews in Western Europe to recover their voice and sense of purpose. The book sets the record straight, presenting the challenges that the Jews in the three communities faced, both in the national context and in the world Jewish arena, and examining how they dealt with them. The book begins by reviewing the actions taken by international Jewish agencies and local leaders to revive Jewish communities in the three countries materially and institutionally, remodeling them as efficient, self-sustaining, and assertive bodies that could meet new challenges. With the creation of the State of Israel, Jews who stayed in Western Europe had to defend their decision to do so while nevertheless showing public support for the new nation. There was also a felt need to respond quickly and effectively to any sign of anti-semitism. In addition, tensions arose between Jews and non-Jews concerning wartime collaboration in deportations, and the need to memorialize Jewish victims of Nazism. The Cold War offered challenges of its own: the perceived need to exclude communist elements from communal affairs was countered by a resistance to pressures from American Jewish leaders to sever links with Jews in Eastern Europe. Yet, beneath the show of assertiveness, Jewish life was fragile, not only because of the physical depletion of the population and of its leadership, but because the Holocaust had shaken religious beliefs and affiliations and had raised questions about the value of preserving a collective identity
