Farthest north : being the record of a voyage of exploration of the ship "Fram" 1893-96, and of a fifteen months' sleigh journey by Dr. Nansen and Lieut. Johansen by Fridtjof Nansen( Book )

123 editions published between 1897 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,671 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In September of 1893, Norwegian zoologist Fridtjof Nansen and a crew manned the schooner Fram, intending to drift, frozen in the Arctic pack-ice, to the North Pole. When it became clear that they would miss the pole, Nansen and his companion Hjalmar Johansen struck off by themselves. Racing the shrinking pack-ice, they attempted, by dog-sled, to go "farthest north." They survived a winter in a moss hut eating walruses and polar bears, and the public assumed they were dead. In the spring of 1896, after three years of trekking, and having made it to within four degrees of the pole, they returned to safety. Nansen's narrative stands with the best writing on polar exploration
In Nacht und Eis : die norwegische Polarexpedition, 1893-1896 by Fridtjof Nansen( Book )

"Nansen, one of the most significant figures in the history of Arctic exploration was originally a naturalist. He decided in 1888 to attempt the crossing of Greenland, and with five companions, including Otto Sverdrup, set off in June of that year. The crossing, by small boat, ski and sledge, achieved many important scientific objectives, including meteorological observations, as well as illustrating the ideal methods of Arctic travel. His most important achievements were on the Fram Expedition of 1893-96. He established the nature and drift of the Arctic Ice-pack, having deliberately allowed the ship, built to his own design, to be frozen into the ice. During the expedition, Nansen, with one companion and 3 dog sledges, achieved the highest latitude yet attained (86o14')."--Abebooks website
New land; four years in the Arctic regions by Otto Neumann Sverdrup( Book )

19 editions published between 1904 and 2014 in English and held by 207 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This well-illustrated account of polar exploration was originally published in Norway in 1903, and in this two-volume English translation in 1904. It tells the story of the four years spent by Otto Sverdrup (1854-1930) and his crew in surveying and charting the seas and coastlines of the Arctic. Sverdrup had qualified as a ship's master when he first met Fridtjof Nansen, whose Greenland expedition of 1888 he accompanied. He advised on the construction of Nansen's wooden ship, the Fram, and became its master in 1895. Both with Nansen and under his own leadership, he undertook many expeditions. In June 1898, he took the Fram and a crew including several scientists to Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic, where they overwintered for four years. Volume 1 describes the life and work of the first two years, including extensive trips away from the Fram, both on land and on the ice
