A young man leaves his old life behind to start over in a new land. Assane was born and raised in Senegal, but is convinced greater opportunities await him, so he stows away on a ship headed to Italy, only to be thrown overboard by the crew not far from his destination. Undeterred, Assane makes his way to Sicily, where he works a variety of punishing odd jobs as he learns to adapt in his new home. Living in fear of the police, Assane makes a valuable friend in Caterina, a social worker who helps him get papers as a legal resident in Sicily, but their relationship becomes difficult when he falls deeply in love with her. Assane also earns the enmity of a gang of thugs who become his new nemeses now that he's no longer on the run from the cops

Assane, un giovane senegalese, musulmano, dopo la morte del padre, interrompe gli studi per emigrare in Italia. Naufraga a Lampedusa. Riesce a fuggire, raggiunge Villa Literno, vicino Napoli, dove un cugino, Makhtar, gli ha assicurato un lavoro. Ma l'impiego è precario, l'ambiente pericoloso. Raggiunge a Firenze una cugina, di madre francese, indossatrice di moda. Salimata lo ospita, potrà trovargli lavoro, metterlo in regola con i documenti. Ma Assane non può accettare: Salimata convive con Vanni, un architetto italiano e questo è contrario ai suoi principi religiosi
