Olga Neuwirth ist sehr jung bereits zu einer der renommiertesten und vielseitigsten Komponistinnen zeitgenössischer Musik avanciert. Von Oktober 1997 bis Februar 1999 zog sie sich nach Venedig zurück, um dort ihre erste große Oper - Olga Neuwirth zieht den Begriff Musiktheater vor - Bählamms Fest zu schreiben. Eineinhalb Jahre also, in denen sie gewissenhaft und höchst lebendig Tagebuch führt und mit Witz und Leidenschaft den Produktionsprozeß kommentiert. Es gibt wenig Dokumente und literarische Zeugnisse, die uns den Alltag dieser in der Gegenwartskunst eher marginalisierten Berufsgruppe so klar vermitteln, ein so vielschichtiges Bild von künstlerischen Produktionsbedingungen zeigen wie Olga Neuwirths Venedig-Tagebuch. In dieser Zeit beschäftigt sie sich nicht nur mit der Konzeption des entstehenden Werks, sondern sie erlebt bei diversen konzertanten Aufführungen die Herausforderungen der Aufführungspraxis, sie begegnet diversen Künstlerkollegen, sie ist zu Gast bei Nuria Schoenberg und wirkt etwa bei den Salzburger Festspielen mit; sie hat aber auch die üblichen Probleme mit Vermietern, mit der Organisation des täglichen Lebens, und zeigt darüberhinaus eine nicht unproblematische Familiensituation vor. Das Panorama dieser 18 Monate in Venedig - von der Autorin in minimalistischen Fotografien der Dachlandschaften festgehalten - öffnet einem die Augen, nicht nur für diese Stadt, auch und vor allem für die Bedingungen der Künstlerin, die sich als Außenseiterin auch innerhalb der Kultur erlebt
