These are not my images (neither here nor there)( Visual )

1 edition published in 2000 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This film follows the voyage of a disillusioned Western filmmaker, accompanied by a half-blind guide, and her encounter with a local filmmaker in a skewed "road movie" set in the near future. It evokes the different meanings of "place:" a location, a territory, a context, a situation, and a home. It speaks of being at your own place and being at the place of another, about identity and alterity, intimacy and distance. The images refer to different modes of image-making (painting, photography, film and video). They alternate from "documentary" to "painterly images" created through digital and analog processing. It questions the boundaries of the "documentary:" How much "reality" do the transformed images and sounds retain? Are framing and editing less deforming than electronic manipulation of images?

3 editions published between 1995 and 2010 in English and German and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An on-going experimental work, Batsry's piece is composed of visual "sentences" with their "literal" description (character generated), accompanied by text and musical "sentences." These "sentences" are edited to create "chapters" dealing with human processes such as perception, action and creation. "[The piece] represents the culmination of Batsry's previous investigations into the gathering and dismantling of information, on terrain mapped out by her earlier tapes. Functioning on three separate but interlocking levels - of visual imagery, character-generated text and lyrical narration - image and text illustrate one another, sometimes literally, sometimes antonymically. Together they construct a parable of gendered vision: the two central characters, represented by myriad forms altered by image processing, are designated as "A Man" who "spreads his vision" but loses his sight and "A Woman" who "focuses her sight" and gains the power to represent herself ... The narration sung by Christine Baczewska in an incantory chant resembling Elizabethan plainsong, is a series of personal parables. It is the voice of the true visionary, the video artist, who speaks of conjuring a world covered by screens and monitors reflecting her revisioned landscapes ... [The] male gaze is literally devoured by woman's fantasy, where vision belongs, not to "the man with a movie camera, but the woman with a video camera who, in Batsry's words, "fights injustice with [her] imagination."

Stories from the old ruin/Leaving the old ruin( Visual )

1 edition published in 1989 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

In Stories from the old ruin, "a faked report of an imaginary investigation," Batsry combines electronically altered and colorized stills with moving images and text of Pliny the Younger's eyewitness account of the destruction of Pompeii, to reflect on the dissolution of civilizations, both ancient and modern. Images of an Asian woman holding her hands up defensively evoke emblematic media representations of Hiroshima and Vietnam, countering the natural cataclysm of Vesuvius with those human-engineered disasters. Batsry fragments and coalesces the image, dismantling the monolith of the past to form both a personal and collective memory. Leaving the old ruin "is a sea journey from past to future, from dark to light ... It examines the state of a social/personal consciousness in transit between a collapsed past and a utopic future." In this segment, the videomaker fashions a psychological landscape of a post-holocaust society which "turned our best friends into a handful of dust" and made the survivors refugees trying "to make sense of what we left us." Commonality of experience is concretized in the image of the running man "heavy with memory."
