Documentary on Bessie Schönberg (1906-1997), a renowned and beloved teacher and mentor of choreography. Tributes by Merce Cunningham, Jerome Robbins, Allan Gurganus, Patricia Bosworth and Meredith Monk, presented at a birthday celebration at the Dance Collection of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts in 1995, are interspersed with Schönberg's own reminiscences of her life and work, including her friendship with Martha Hill and her performing career with Martha Graham, which was cut short by a knee injury. Schönberg is also seen working with young choreographers at The Juilliard School, Dance Theater Workshop, and Jacob's Pillow, and observing and commenting upon works by Victoria Marks, Ronald Brown, Claire Porter and Meredith Monk. Inside/out is a series of outdoor programs in which artists perform and discuss their choreography with audiences in an informal setting. In this program, Ann Carlson rehearses two sections of her work in progress, White. The first section, Untitled (later titled See) is rehearsed by five visually impaired dancers. The second section (This moment) is rehearsed by Carlson and Andy Kirshner. Carlson speaks about how the piece developed, and the dancers introduce themselves and describe their performance backgrounds. The recording ends abruptly

In the first section of the program, Bessie Schönberg speaks about her choreographic workshop and students perform movement studies and duets they choreographed. In the second section, guest instructor Susan Pilarre speaks about Balanchine technique. Students demonstrate exercises and combinations from Pilarre's class, and perform excerpts from Stars and stripes and Rubies. At the end of the program, students introduce themselves and identify the companies with which they dance
