Abrégé des vies des principaux fondateurs des religions de l'Église, représentez dans le choeur de l'Abbaie de S. Lambert de Liessies en Haynaut; avec les maximes spirituelles de chaque fondateur by Etienne Binet ( Book )
1 edition published in 1634 in French and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Collaboration between the brothers Theodore and Cornelis Galle illustrating the now mostly lost paintings from the Choir of the Benedictine Abbey of Liessies, northern France. Each subject is provided with a brief biography by the Jesuit author Etienne Binet (1569-1639). Theodore made designs from the original paintings which were then engraved by Cornelis to produce portraits of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, early Church Fathers, founders of religious orders, Liessies most revered abbot, Louis de Blois (1506-1565) and recent Saints such as St. Ignatius Loyola, St. Theresa of Avila and St. Philip of Neri, all within richly detailed borders. The portraits were dispersed or burned following the French Revolution but some are still to be seen in neighbouring churches. Cf. Bookseller's blurb

This album of engravings depicting the Life and Passion of Jesus Christ is meant to accompany another work of the same format and published at the same time, Divinarum nuptiarum conventa et acta (Antwerp 1573). Divinarum nuptiarum consists of 28 engravings showing a bride Sponsa, preparing to meet her bridegroom on her wedding day. In this allegorical tale, Sponsa represents the human soul, which, in order to receive Christ in the fullest spiritual sense must attain a virtuous life. In preparation, she is visited by five virtues whose influences are meant to enhance her spiritual quest. Midway through the journey, at plate number 17 in the first edition, she is handed a mirror, "the mirror to the soul," through which she is able to meditate on the life and passion of Christ. It is from this engraving that the second series begins: on the title page of Christi Jesu the vignette shows the face of Christ in the center of the mirror. Beginning with the Annunciation in plate 1, and ending with the Last Judgment at plate 50, the richly-illustrated engravings are spiritual meditations to be reflected and absorbed within the soul
