Die Rehabilitierung des Totgeglaubten wird zum Joker im Spiel um gesellschaftlichen Aufstieg und Fall, den der Anwalt, der alle Parteien zugleich vertritt, listig immer neu ausspielt. Filmisch zurückhaltend, doch präzis, und schauspielerisch eine Delikatesse. Zoom, 2/95 Paris, 1817. Ein seltsam aussehender Mann wird zum fünften Mal im Büro des Anwalts Derville vorstellig und endlich auch vorgelassen. Er behauptet, jener Colonel Chabert zu sein, der vor zehn Jahren für tot erklärt wurde, nachdem er seine Truppen auf heroische Weise in die Schlacht von Eylau geführt hatte. Der Mann erzählt seine Geschichte so überzeugend, daß er den skeptischen Derville beeindruckt. Aber ist es möglich, daß ein bitterarmer Mann zehn Jahre im Feindesland überstehen konnte? Diese Herausforderung weckt in Derville den Spielerinstinkt. Er übernimmt Chabert als Klienten, obwohl - oder gerade weil - er auch dessen Frau vertritt, die Gräfin Ferraud, die in der Zwischenzeit wieder geheiratet hat ... "COLONEL CHABERT interessierte mich, weil er Fragen der menschlichen Natur behandelt, die zeitlos sind.

When he regains his health and memory, he goes back to Paris, where his "widow", Anne has married the Count Ferraud and is financing his rise to power using Chabert's money.
