Exporting fascism : Italian fascists and Britain's Italians in the 1930s by Claudia Baldoli( Book )

17 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 194 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How did Italians living in Britain respond to Mussolini's fascism? What links did ex-pat fascists forge with the British Right? To what extent did Italophilia exist in Britain during the Mussolini years? Exporting Fascism addresses these questio ns, which have long been ignored by historians. While there is much material available about Nazi sympathizers in the United Kingdom, there is comparatively very little about Italophile fascist sympathizers. The author uncovers the policy of Mussolin i's government to transform Italian communities abroad into 'little Fascist Italies'. Ambassador Din
Bombing, states and peoples in Western Europe, 1940-1945 by R. J Overy( Book )

11 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 168 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the cover. Over the six years of the Second World War, most of urban Europe was subject to bomb attack, from the French Atlantic ports to the major cities of central Germany, from the Dutch and Belgian cities to the ports and towns of Sicily. Throughout the whole region perhaps as many as 700,000 were killed. In this collection, an international panel of historians explores the immediate effects of that wartime disaster for both the urban communities that suffered it and for the surrounding society and political order that has to cope with evacuation, higher levels of crime or non-compliance and changing attitudes towards authority. Considering the cultural, social and political responses to bombing rather than the strategic and ethical dimensions which have formed the core of the discussion thus far, this collection makes it clear that the bombing had ripple effects far beyond the areas immediately targeted by the bombers
Forgotten blitzes : France and Italy under allied air attack, 1940-1945 by Claudia Baldoli( Book )

10 editions published in 2012 in English and Undetermined and held by 138 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"France and Italy account for fully one third of all Allied bombs dropped on Europe between 1940 and 1945. Italy received some 370,000 tons of bombs, nearly five times the total dropped on Britain by the Luftwaffe; France, over 570,000, nearly eight times the British figure. In each country, over 55,000 civilians died. Until now, studies of bombing in World War 2 have focused largely on the British and German experiences; few cover France or Italy. Forgotten Blitzes aims to remedy this. It explains the reasons for the Allied offensives, and uses political, social and cultural approaches to explore the challenges faced by states and peoples as the bombs fell. Massive research in local and national archives across four countries, complemented by diaries and personal memoirs, has allowed the authors to build a detailed, comparative picture of the impact of bombing on states, local authorities and individuals"--Provided by publisher
A British fascist in the Second World War : the Italian war diary of James Strachey Barnes, 1943-45 by James Strachey Barnes( Book )

5 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 82 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A British Fascist in the Second World War presents the edited diary of the British fascist Italophile James Strachey Barnes. Previously unpublished, the diary is a significant source for all students of the Second World War and the history of European and British fascism. The diary covers the period from the fall of Mussolini in 1943 to the end of the war in 1945, two years in which the British Fascist Italophile Major James Strachey Barnes lived in Italy as a 'traitor'. Like William Joyce in Germany, he was involved in propaganda activity directed at Britain, the country of which he was formally a citizen. Brought up by upper-class English grandparents who had retired to Tuscany, he chose Italy as his own country and, in 1940, applied for Italian citizenship. By then, Barnes had become a well-known fascist writer. His diary is an extraordinary source written during the dramatic events of the Italian campaign. It reveals how events in Italy gradually affected his ideas about fascism, Italy, civilisation and religion. It tells much about Italian society under the strain of war and Allied bombing, and about the behaviour of both prominent fascist leaders and ordinary Italians. Complete here with a scholarly introduction and an extensive bibliography and sources section, the diary is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in learning more about the ideological complexities of the Second World War and fascism in twentieth-century Europe"--
