Diva : defiance and passion in early Italian cinema by Angela Dalle Vacche( Book )

1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 259 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Animated by a luminous goddess at its center, the diva film provided a forum for denouncing social evils and exploring new models of behavior among the sexes ... Dalle Vacche offers the first authoritative study of this important film genre of the cinema that preceded the First World War ... Contrasting the Italian diva with the Hollywood vamp Theda Bara and the famous Danish star Asta Nielsen, Dalle Vacche shows how the diva oscillates between articulating Henri Bergson's vibrant life-force and representing the suffering figure of the Catholic mater dolorosa."--Cover

Found footage : cinema exposed( Book )

3 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 105 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This spirited work commemorates the opening of the EYE Film Institute in Amsterdam in spring 2012. Found Footage, the first exhibition in the new building, takes as its theme the museum's vast and valuable collection and shows how filmmakers and artists repurpose recent and historical footage to create new works: older narrative structures are unraveled to create new stories, images are recontextualized to produce new meaning, and different edits of the film footage are used to highlight new political or emotional significances. A beautifully illustrated and constructed volume, Found Footage reveals the power of film to be reused and recycled to create endless new pieces of art

7 editions published in 2004 in 3 languages and held by 97 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Two films originally distributed by Jean Desmet or exhibited in his own cinema, Lyrical nitrate is a selection of silent film fragments, constructed from old black & white and color tinted and toned nitrate films. Soundtrack is present on some of the clips and is from old recordings, ranging from Caruso to the sounds of a glass harmonica. The second film is a mockumentary that tells the fictional story of the ship Hollandia sailing near South Pole in 1905-1906 as told by ship's carpenter J.C. Sullivan. Uses the documentary style filming intermixed with archival footage actually shot during the period of real expeditions to document this fictional story of a tunnel connecting the two poles

"In June 1905, we're told, the sailing ship Hollandia set sail from Norway for a secret destination: the South Pole, a white and inhospitable void at the end of the world. In 1941, an interviewer tracked down and filmed the expedition's sole survivor, a ship's carpenter, in a tiny Irish cottage.
