Sborník je prvním pokusem o osvětlení umělecké, skladatelské, dirigentské a pedagogické činnosti jednoho z nejvýznačnějších českých houslistů. Umělcovi současníci (O. Kredba. A. Götz, K. Šnebergr, J. Lahulek, F. Stupka, O. Haša) probírají nejen technickou stránku Kocianovy osobité ušlechtilosti přenesu, ale vyzdvihují především jeho ideově umělecké pojetí význačných klasických i novějších skladeb, zabývají se současně zásadními otázkami českého reprodukčního stylu a tradice, již udržovala a dále rozvíjela Ševčíkova škola a seznamují se společenskými činiteli, kterými se utvářela kultura Kocianova umění. Osobní vzpomínkou, hodnotící umělcovu lidovost a vlastenectví, přispěl do sborníku Z. Fierlinger. Kniha je doplněna seznamem Kocianových žáků a soupisem jeho skladeb. (S použitím redakční poznámky.)
