The breaking of nations : order and chaos in the Twenty-first Century by Robert Cooper ( Book )
32 editions published between 2003 and 2005 in English and held by 760 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Cooper shows that the greatest question facing postmodern states is how they should deal with a world in which missiles and terrorists ignore borders and where Cold War alliances no longer guarantee security. He argues that when dealing with a hostile outside enemy, civilized countries need to revert to tougher methods from an earlier era--force, preemptive attack, deception-- if we are to safeguard peaceful coexistence thoughout the civilized world-- from back cover
The post-modern state and the world order by Robert Cooper ( Book )
13 editions published between 1996 and 2001 in English and Undetermined and held by 131 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The whole world changed in 1989, but few have yet understood just how much. In this essay, Robert Cooper sets out a radical new interpretation of the shape of the world. He explains the post-Cold War world in terms of the divisions between the 'pre-modern' parts of the world (such as Somalia or Liberia), 'modern' states such as Brazil or China, and the 'postmodern' areas of the world, where individualistic and post-industrial societies have superceded traditional nations of sovereignty. Europe, he argues, is the clearest example of post-modern order in which foreign and domestic policy are inextricably intertwined, tools of governance are shared and security is no longer based on control over territory or the balance of power." "This essay has become required reading for anyone who needs to understand international relations. The second edition updates the original argument and offers new material on the role of democracy and religion in international politics. It is a crucial guide to conflicts and dilemmas of the twenty-first century."--BOOK JACKET

Harold Macmillan and the Middle East, 1955-1956 by Robert Cooper ( Book )
1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
This thesis examines Harold Macmillan's role in formulating and implementing Britain's policy in the Middle East during the period from him becoming Foreign Secretary in April 1955 to the cessation of Suez hostilities on 6 November 1956. The intention is to explore what this reveals of his character and beliefs. The argument in the thesis is in three parts. Firstly that Macmillan's motivation was the preservation of Britain's economic interest in the region, principally oil. Secondly that as a result of his character and background his outlook was limited. He could not detach himself from an outdated historic attachment to the British empire. This made it difficult for him to consider other policies that might have been more successful in protecting British interests. Thirdly his concept of Britain's place in the world was allied to a conflict in himself between the pragmatic realist and the romantic imperialist. His attitude in regard to, and actions in respect of, the Baghdad Pact, Project Alpha, the Buraimi Oasis, the Aswan dam and the Suez affair are discussed. Intellectually he accepted that countries within the Middle East were seeking to free themselves from colonial shackles. Emotionally he regarded the relationship between those countries and Britain almost in feudal terms whereby Britain provided protection in return for loyalty. After the nationalization of the Suez canal his emotional side prevailed. This led to his central role in the ensuing debacle
