Chris Ofili by Chris Ofili( Book )

3 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 376 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Chris Ofili's intricately constructed works, combining beadlike dots of paint, collaged images from popular media, and elephant dung, create a unique iconography that marries African artistic and ritual practices with Western art historical traditions and contemporary hip-hop culture. This beautifully designed book, made in close collaboration with the artist, is the first to examine Ofili's artistic development and surveys his work in watercolor, graphite drawing, and sculpture. Literary and historical parallels from a formidable list of contributors explore the ways through which the artist has grasped his times with a palpable sense of history."--Jacket

Kara Walker : narratives of a negress by Kara Elizabeth Walker( Book )

8 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 24 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Kara Walker: Narratives of a Negress presents a comprehensive overview of Walker's work, beginning with her first cut-paper wall installation, Gone, An Historical Romance of a Civil War as it Occurred between the Dusky Thighs of One Young Negress and Her Heart, 1994, through new multimedia installations that feature layers of colored projections. The 1996 series of twenty-four watercolors, Brown Follies, is reproduced in full, as are many views of Walker's past exhibitions. Throughout the book is a selection of Walker's writings printed as they appear typed on index cards. These writings reveal a rarely seen side of the artist, whose words are as provocative as her installations and drawings. Also included are four essays that discuss Walker's place in art history, formal and narrative dimensions of her work, her relation to culture at large, and issues of race, sexuality, and representation addressed in her art."--Jacket

Here, no image or structure is complete without symbolic framing devices, which also require framing devices, and so on. Ad infinitum. Malibu. Rockstars and fallen rocks and the edge, here is where the European conquest of the New World meets its fountain of youth endgame. We have reached the end, and it is vast."
Bureau of refugees by Kara Elizabeth Walker( Book )

5 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book features the works from the new series "Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands - Records, 'Miscellaneous Papers' National Archives M809 Roll 23," named after the historical record that documents, among other things, atrocities against freed blacks during Reconstruction. These small, economically rendered cutouts reflect on the sad, repetitive nature of racist atrocities, as well as art's tenuous relationship with the real world of political injustice. Also included are paintings with collaged elements and Kara Walker's signature silhouettes, and a multipart work consisting solely of handwritten texts in which the artist meditates on the "perpetrator" as well as willing and unwilling victims of circumstances."--Jacket
