It focuses on the career of Field Marshal Paul Sanford, 3rd Baron Methuen, whose traditional military training, used so effectively in Queen Victoria's small wars, was put to the test by the modern challenges of the South African War. Through detailed analyses of Methuen's campaigns, this study demonstrates that neither Methuen nor the British army was prepared for modern warfare. Despite this, Methuen and the British officer class were able to make the necessary transition to defeat the Boers and propel the British army into the twentieth century+-+4519919625121ocn881551042visu19020.93Mitchell and KenyonAs railway dignitaries and porters mill around, an open-top carriage arrives to bear away the third Lord Methuen. A senior military officer, he was wounded and captured in March 1902 at Tweebosch in the Second Boer War. Maybe this film presents the return of a war hero, but the crowds seem more entertained by the camera in front of them than by the carriage which passes almost unnoticed122ocn794153105file19020.82Guest, Herbert MelvilleThe Anglo-Boer war with Lord Methuen and the first divisionHistory22ocn668121594book19020.47Guest, Herbert MelvilleWith Lord Methuen and the First division21ocn085070658book19650.26Spoelstra, BLord Methuen uitoorlê deur Koos de la Rey21ocn040605868mix19961.00Miller, Stephen MLord Methuen and the South African War : the British army in transitionHistoryMilitary historyBiography11ocn045565466book19200.47Christie, Manson & WoodsCatalogue of fine old English silver plate : the property of Field-Marshal ...
