Correspondence series is arranged chronologically into four subseries: Family subseries containing letters written by Behnken to his eight children (1943-1968); Calls subseries containing correspondence concerning various positions offered to Behnken by congregations and by Lutheran educational institutions and societies; Alphabetical subseries containing correspondence covering a wide variety of topics and arranged alphabetically by name of correspondent; and D.D. Hermann Sasse subseries containing correspondence (1945-1967) from the German theologian. Subject files series consists of some correspondence, news clippings, ephemera, and essays on various topics relating to Lutheran affairs, together with manuscripts for his autobiography, This I Recall, and a proposed work entitled Notations on the Book of Acts. Photographs series is divided into four subseries: Family, Professional, Travel, and Other sources containing over 500 images of Behnken and his family, mostly publicity photos related to his work as a pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Houston, Tex., and a president of the synod.
