The pianist by Władysław Szpilman( Recording )

3 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 31 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The story of Wladyslaw Szpilman, a young Jewish pianist, is a stirring portrayal of battling against the odds, of determination and a refusal to be beaten. The German attack on Poland in 1939 led to the deportation and murder of Szpilman's family. But, thanks to a music-loving policeman who recognised him, Szpilman escaped, hiding in the dereliction of the ghetto. His bestselling memoir tells of his war years and quotes sections from the diary of a young German officer, Wilm Hosenfeld. Wilm discovered Szpilman's hide-out and offered him unexpected help. Portions of the diary survived after Hosenfeld's death in a Stalingrad labour camp and reveals his outrage at the madness and evil he witnessed
